The Communities Over Cages: Close the Jail ATL Campaign is a ground breaking, local campaign dedicated to divesting from Atlanta’s unjust criminal legal system and investing in our communities by closing the extra City Jail (ACDC), repurposing the facility into a Center for Wellness & Freedom, and reallocating the $32.5 million dollars spent annually to services and supports which help our people thrive. The Campaign is led by Women on the Rise and the Racial Justice Action Center and has the support of over 40 organizations comprising the Campaign Alliance.
WOMEN ON THE RISE
Women on the Rise is a grassroots organization led by women targeted and/or impacted by the criminal legal system founded and directed by Marilynn Winn. Women on the Rise works to educate, heal, and empower ourselves, one another, and our communities to demand justice, dignity, and liberation for all. Women on the Rise envisions a world where women, families and communities are safe, whole and free. To bring that vision into existence, we transform lives, laws and social institutions.
The leadership body of Women on the Rise is Harriet's Daughters.
RACIAL JUSTICE ACTION CENTER
The Racial Justice Action Center (RJAC) builds the grassroots leadership, power, and capacity of marginalized communities to win political, economic, and social transformation in the Atlanta Metro Area. We engage in Transformative Organizing which includes intensive leadership development, strategic campaigns, policy advocacy, and movement building in order to advance a vision of a radically restructured society where justice exists for all people.
RJAC’s projects include Women on the Rise and the Solutions Not Punishment Collaborative.
