THE CAMPAIGN

The Communities Over Cages: Close the Jail ATL Campaign is a ground breaking, local campaign dedicated to divesting from Atlanta’s unjust criminal legal system and investing in our communities by closing the extra City Jail (ACDC), repurposing the facility into a Community Resource Center and affordable multifamily rental housing, and reallocating the remaining $15 million dollars spent annually to services and supports which help our people thrive. The Campaign was co-launched and co-led by Women on the Rise and the Racial Justice Action Center with the support of over 40 organizations comprising the Campaign Alliance. In January 2021, Women on the Rise began leading the campaign with the support of a 5 -organization Anchor Team.
WOMEN ON THE RISE
Women on the Rise is a grassroots organization led by women targeted and/or impacted by the criminal legal system. Women on the Rise works to educate, heal, and empower ourselves, one another, and our communities to demand justice, dignity, and liberation for all. Women on the Rise envisions a world where women, families and communities are safe, whole and free. To bring that vision into existence, we transform lives, laws and social institutions. Women on the Rise was originally founded as a project of the Racial Justice Action Center, before launching into its own organization in 2020.
