MAYOR BOTTOMS COMMITS TO LEGISLATION TO CLOSE AND REPURPOSE JAIL

Updated: May 2, 2019

After months of collaborative work, the Mayor’s Office, who has shown enthusiastic support for this initiative, has officially committed to the #CommunitiesOverCages #CloseTheJailATL campaign goal of a legislated Design Team to repurpose the jail.

A formal, legislated Design Team will ensure that the people of Atlanta, not corporate interests, determine what happens with the building and the $32.5 million dollars it takes to operate.

While Council Members Westmoreland, Dickens, Farokhi, and Hillis have all committed to support such legislation, we need 8 council members at least to ensure it passes. This is why it's more important than ever that community members JOIN US ON MONDAY, MAY 6th FOR OUR DAY OF REDEMPTION!

NOW, in addition to telling decision-makers about reforms needed to ensure Atlanta DIVESTS from punishment and INVESTS in its people, we will encourage Councilmembers to vote YES to a community-led design team.

Check back for updates- we expect to see this legislation soon.
